TYM TRACTOR JOINS RANKS OF PHOTOGRAPHER’S AUTOMOTIVE PROWESS
Bugatti. Pierce Arrow. Mercedes-Benz. Rolls-Royce. The TYM K-2 Series of Tractor.
When TYM America needed product photography of its Korean Import Tractors for
collateral sales materials, the TYM team contracted with the internationally
known professional noted for his acumen in lighting and creative imaging,
Michael Furman.
(Harrisburg PA. . . . JANUARY 2006) When Volvo launched its front wheel
drive cars, Nissan the Altima and Quest models, even the Mercedes CLK and BMW
7-series, they called on a photographer who is internationally known for his
automotive style, Michael Furman. So when TYM America needed product photography
to introduce the new TYM America K2 line of tractors and its accessories to the
United States, the first call they made was to Michael Furman.
“I started by surfing the web for photographers and was drawn to the photography
of Michael Furman,” said Craig Pickles, president of TYM America’s importer,
AmericanJawa. “When Michael and I met and he showed me his coffee table book
of Ralph Lauren’s automobile collection as his “sample portfolio,” I knew I
found who I was looking for.”
In the past five years, TYM cornered 10% of the tractor market in the United
Kingdom, and now they are poised to launch its range of high quality advanced
design tractors in the United States. To do that, they are preparing an
integrated marketing and public relations campaign requiring a variety of
materials—first and foremost of which are quality photographs of the products
themselves.
“A picture is worth thousands of words,” said Pickles. “Our tractors are unique
for they are crafted with unique lines and in any color imaginable, so we required
photography that reflects the quality and uniqueness of the product.”
Michael Furman, principal in Michael Furman Photographer, LTD., located in
Philadelphia, PA., has taken a life-long love of photography and created a
professional career working for top automotive clients and their agencies.
While he was trained on the traditional formats of film, he has become a master
of digital imaging. His specialty is in studio lighting and has one of the best
equipped studios specifically designed for these large products and the conditions
needed to show them ‘in the best light.’

“Dave Phillips, my digital artist, and I review the possibilities before
starting an assignment,” said Furman. “While some photographers look to
create other worldly scenes with their digital capability, Dave and I usually
try a more subtle approach. Often times our use of multiple images and compositing
circumvents the impracticalities of straight photography. It may take quite a
number of smaller shots to build the final image.”
The list of Furman’s subjects is extensive, comprised of the classics from
Bugatti, Pierce Arrow, Cord, DuPont, Minerva, Franklin, Scarab, and Kissel,
to the LaSalle, Chrysler, Delahaye, Delage, Duesenberg, Bentley, Cadillac,
Lincoln, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes Benz, Packard, Auburn, and Talbot-Lago. The
list is always growing and now includes helicopters and ocean- going sailing
yachts.
The TYM Tractor is not the first tractor shoot for Furman’s studio however.
They have worked for Case Tractor and Ingersoll-Rand, as well as Mack’s Vision
Truck line.
“We delivered a truckload of our tractor models to Furman’s studio in Philadelphia,
and had personnel there for each day of the shoot to clean and prepare each piece,”
said Pickles. “The studio shoot itself took two weeks.”
The first models Furman and Phillips photographed were those to be introduced first
in 2006, the T233 and T273 which are 23 hp and 27 hp respectively. The TYM K6 2006
models came next, featuring the newly fitted Turbo Caterpillar engines. Concluding
the shoot was a variety of accessories and attachments including the TYM front
loaders and TYM TMF series of mowers.
The Furman creative team is currently in the final stages for delivery. According
to Phillips, the client will receive finished files, assembled and retouched for
optimum reproduction.
